You don't need expensive gear to start DJing. You need two songs and a little patience.

About

I started DJing on a cheap controller in my bedroom in Revere, learning from forum threads and a lot of trial and error. It took me far too long to figure out things a friend could have explained in ten minutes. These days I play weekend events, and I still practice the basics every week.

With beginners, I focus on fundamentals: choosing a first controller and software, organizing your music, beatmatching by ear, and putting together a clean twenty-minute mix. Record a practice mix and text it to me, and on our next call I’ll tell you exactly where the transitions are working and where they aren’t.

Best for

  • Total beginners choosing first gear
  • Learning to beatmatch by ear
  • Recording and sharing a first mix
