Your First Day Skiing as an Adult

Who is this for? Adults who have never skied and are planning a first day this winter in New England. Journey time: 2 to 3 weeks of preparation, then your first day on snow.

1. Pick a small mountain close to home

Smaller hills have gentler learning areas, shorter lines and lower prices. Near Boston, Blue Hills, Nashoba Valley, Wachusett and Bradford are all within about an hour.

2. Book a learn-to-ski package

Many mountains bundle a beginner lesson, rentals and a beginner-area lift ticket. Book ahead; weekend spots fill up.

3. Layer for cold, skip cotton

  • Base layer: synthetic or wool
  • Mid layer: fleece
  • Outer: waterproof jacket and pants
  • One pair of ski socks, gloves or mittens, goggles, neck gaiter

Cotton holds sweat and makes you cold.

4. Rent the full kit

Boots, skis, poles and a helmet. Tell the shop you’re a first-timer. Boots should feel snug, with toes touching the front when you stand straight and pulling back when you bend your knees. Tuck nothing into the boot except your sock.

5. Arrive early

Rentals take longer than you expect. Get there 60 to 90 minutes before your lesson.

6. Know what day one covers

Walking in skis, getting up after a fall, the wedge (“pizza”) to slow down and stop, gentle turns, and the conveyor lift. Falling is part of the plan.

7. Stop before you’re exhausted

Most beginners are done after three or four hours. Tired legs make for sloppy falls.

8. Book day two within two weeks

Day two is when linking turns starts to click. Wait too long and you start over.

You’re ready to begin. Rent the gear, take the lesson, plan on falling, and book day two before you drive home.
