Getting Back Into Tennis Without Expensive Lessons

Who is this for? Adults who played a little years ago, or never had proper lessons, and want to rally comfortably on public courts. Journey time: 4 to 6 weeks.

1. Get a forgiving racket

Look for a head size around 100 square inches and a strung weight of roughly 10 to 11 ounces. Many shops let you demo rackets for a small fee before buying.

2. Choose soft strings

Synthetic gut or multifilament. Skip full polyester for now; it is stiff on the arm and built for heavy hitters.

3. Use the wall

Many public courts have a practice wall. Spend 15 minutes on forehands, then backhands, then volleys from closer in. Aim just above net height and count your longest streak.

4. Build a serve you trust

Practice the toss alone first: it should land in the same spot, slightly in front of you, every time. Then serve at three-quarter speed. The goal is 7 out of 10 in the box, not aces.

5. Film your strokes

Prop your phone on the fence and record 30 seconds of forehands from the side. Check two things: are your shoulders turning, and does your swing finish over your shoulder?

6. Rate yourself honestly

Most returning adults sit around NTRP 2.5 to 3.0. Use that number when you look for partners, leagues and clinics so you land with players at your level.

7. Find hitting partners

  • USTA League play, organized by NTRP level
  • Meetup and community tennis groups
  • Clinics through your local parks and recreation department
  • Regulars at your court: ask, drop-in hitting is common

8. Play points early

Rally cooperatively to 10, then play tiebreak games. Scoring sticks faster when you use it.

9. Keep a weekly rhythm

Two sessions a week: one at the wall, one with a partner. Consistency matters more than session length.

You’re ready to begin. A wall, a soft racket and one partner at your level will get you further than a season of lessons you dread.
