Who is this for? Adults who bought a guitar, quit once or twice, and want an attempt that sticks. Journey time: 3 to 4 weeks.
1. Pick the song before anything else
Choose one song you love that uses mostly G, C, D and Em. Thousands of popular songs do. Check the chords on a chord site before you practice a single shape.
2. Make the guitar easy to play
If the strings sit high above the fretboard, every chord hurts. A shop setup usually costs under $100 and makes a cheap guitar feel like a better one. Tune every time you pick it up; a free tuner app is enough.
3. Learn the four shapes, one at a time
Start with Em (two fingers), then G, C and D. Press with your fingertips, just behind the fret. Buzzing usually means you are too far from the fret or another finger is touching the string.
4. Practice changes, not chords
Pick two chords and switch between them for 60 seconds. Count the clean changes and write the number down. Do two or three pairs a day. That number climbing is your progress.
5. Keep the strumming simple
Four steady downstrokes per bar. Add down, down-up, up-down-up only once your changes are smooth. Keep the strumming hand moving even when the next chord is not ready.
6. Ten minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday
- 2 minutes: tune and warm up
- 5 minutes: one-minute changes
- 3 minutes: play along with your song
Leave the guitar on a stand, not in its case. Fewer steps means more days you actually play.
7. Expect sore fingertips
Tender fingertips are normal for the first two to three weeks while calluses form. Sharp pain is not; if you feel it, rest for a day.
8. Play along with the recording
Slow the song to 0.75 speed on YouTube. Missing a chord is fine. Keep strumming and land on the next one.
9. Record yourself every week
One voice memo each Sunday. Compare week one to week three when it feels like nothing is improving.
